Coming out of the shadows: Woods

Tiger Woods is expected to announce his comeback tomorrow, almost three months after taking an ‘indefinite’ break from golf.

The world No 1 will end his silence in the controlled atmosphere of a gathering for ‘friends, colleagues and close associates’ in Florida, his manager Mark Steinberg said on Wednesday.

Woods will make a statement in which he will talk about his transgressions and, given that it will take place at US Tour headquarters, he is expected to announce the date of his comeback. But don’t expect any weeping Oprah Winfrey-style confessions.

A pool of reporters will be there but it is understood that no questions will be allowed.

Steinberg said: ‘Tiger plans to discuss his past and his future and he intends to apologise for his behaviour.’

This will be the first time Woods has been seen since that infamous Thanksgiving evening on November 27 last year, when he crashed into a water hydrant outside his home and sent a plume of rumour and revelation gushing into the air.

Since then, at least 12 women have claimed to have had affairs with Woods.

Back on course: Woods is expected to announce his return

Steinberg's full statement read: 'Tiger Woods will be speaking to a small group of friends, colleagues and close associates at 11am (4pm GMT) at the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

'Tiger plans to discuss his past and his future and he intends to apologise for his behaviour.

'This will not be an open media event. However, it is understood that there are many media who are interested in what he has to say.

'In order to accommodate as best we can, we are working to arrange pool coverage of Tiger's remarks.

'There will be network pool cameras providing coverage of his talk. The feed will be available live to any network or station that wishes to air it.

'A limited number of print and wire service reporters will be in attendance and will share their notes, colour and background on a pooled basis.'

Steinberg also commented: 'While Tiger feels that what happened is fundamentally between him and his wife, he also recognises that he has hurt those who are close to him.'
