5. Beijing, China: Hip hop grannies

A group of Chinese grandmas started a hip hop group -- insert ambulance joke here. But wait until you see them in colorful headbands and baggy urban wear, popping and locking without any sign of arthritis. 68-year-old leader Mrs. Wu initially met resistance from friends, who told her the dance was only performed by “bad people at the bottom of the society.” But she prevailed and now has a 60-strong posse with an average age of 57.

4. Ito, Japan: Laundry tub race

For 54 years, Ito residents have been going “rub-a-dub-dub.” Every July, hundreds of competitors squeeze their bums into a laundry tub and paddle furiously down Matsukawa River. The race is a tip of the hat to those who formerly washed clothes on the river banks. Some participants don costumes -- beer hats, Groucho Marx glasses -- and more than a few makeshift boats capsize.

3. Mikame, Japan: Pig rodeo

Let me set the scene: You’re perched on top of a 140 kg bucking beast, trying desperately to hang on for a chance at ¥50,000. The ferocious animal isn’t a steer or a bull… but a one-year-old pig. Mikame’s one-of-a-kind rodeo has been a summer tradition for 26 years. The video reveals that few contestants are able to mount a pig for more than a few seconds.

2. Southeast Asia: Elephant polo

Swap the horses for elephants and you’ve got pachyderm polo. Two riders sit on each beast: one steers the animal; the other strikes at balls with a wicket. According to legend, the game originated in Nepal after a drinking bout. Today, it’s popular all over Southeast Asia. There’s even an annual World Elephant Polo Championship.

Asia is awash in highly imaginative recreational sports. Will pig rodeos and penguin soccer someday be recognized by the Olympics? One can dream…

1. Seoul, Korea: Penguin soccer

To promote its participation in the 2002 World Cup, South Korean organizers rounded up a team of small penguins. The rookies donned colorful jerseys and punted a miniature soccer ball. Despite the haphazard game, the fangirls were visibly charmed.

Pandas Wang Wang (网网) and Fu Ni (福妮) arrived at their new home around 1pm on November 28, 2009 afternoon - driven there in a climate-controlled semi-trailer escorted by police. They arrived in Adelaide around 10.25am on a Singapore Airlines cargo plane named Mega Ark with chief panda keeper Simone Bayly - who accompanied the pair during the flight from China, through Singapore.

It will be another two weeks before the pandas go on display. The official launch of the giant panda exhibit by the Governor General, Quentin Bryce, is scheduled for Sunday, December 13. Public viewing commences on Monday, December 14, but hourly viewing slots are filling fast.

Zoos South Australia chief executive Dr Chris West predicts 262,000 more people from overseas and 1.3 million Australians will choose to visit Adelaide because of the pandas in the next 10 years. [endtext]

A large ball of fire streaking across the night time skies just after midnight had many Utahn's wondering what they saw early Wednesday morning.

Dozens of calls came with people wondering if they saw a shooting star, others wondered if it was the end of the world, military testing, or even a UFO.

People from Mona to Spanish Fork from Ogden to Bountiful all calling in a very similar sighting More...

To many, it looked like a large fall of fire, lightning up the sky, some say like daylight, others reported a blue like light that lasted for about 30 seconds.

And many reported hearing a boom about 5 minutes later.

Utah's NASA and Solar System Ambassador Patrick Wiggins said that it was a meteor also known as a bolide.

From his observatory near Stansbury Park he says the break up of the meteor occured at about 240 to 250 degrees azimuth which puts it just north of southwest.

He also heard the sound of an explosion that would put the breakup of the bolide about 100 km in that direction placing it high above Granite Peak in the west desert.

Paloma Faith - New York Lyrics

The days were long and the night so cold
The pages turn and the tale unfolds
He left me for another lady

She stood so tall and she never slept
There was not one moment he could regret
He left me for another lady

He took my hand one day and told me
He was leaving
Me disbelieving
And I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I
Had to let him go

CHORUS:
Her name was New York
New York and she
Took his heart away from mine
Her name was New York,
New York
She had poisoned his sweet mind

The wolves they howl
For my lost soul
I fell down
A deep black hole
He’d left me for another lady
She poured the drinks
And she poured the power
Diamond girl
Who could talk for hours
He’d left me for another lady

Now I am on my own
He told me
He was leaving
And I was pleading
And I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I
Had to let him go

CHORUS

The greatest times
I don’t want to hear it
Your new life tonight
I don’t want to hear it
The newfound friends
She introduced you to
I don’t want to know them
I just want to be with you
Please don’t make me go to
New York

New York
She took your heart away from mine
Her name was New York
New York
She poisoned your sweet mind
She poisoned your sweet mind

Don’t look at me like that
You amaze me

He ate my heart
He a-a-ate my heart
(You little monster)

He ate my heart
He a-a-ate my heart out
(You amaze me)

Look at him
Look at me
That boy is bad
And honestly
He’s a wolf in disguise
But I can’t stop staring in those evil eyes

I asked my girlfriend if she’d seen you round before
She mumbled something while we got down on the floor baby
We might’ve fucked not really sure, don’t quite recall
But something tells me that I’ve seen him, yeah

That boy is a monster
M-M-M-Monster
That boy is a monster
M-M-M-Monster
That boy is a monster
Er-er-er-er

He ate my heart
(I love that girl)
He ate my heart
(Wanna talk to her, she’s hot as hell)

He licked his lips
Said to me
Girl you look good enough to eat
Put his arms around me
Said “Boy now get your paws right off me”

I asked my girlfriend if she’d seen you round before

He ate my heart
He ate my heart
Instead he’s a monster in my bed

I wanna Just Dance
But he took me home instead
Uh oh! There was a monster in my bed
We french kissed on a subway train
He tore my clothes right off

He ate my heart the he ate my brain
Uh oh uh oh
(I love that girl)
(Wanna talk to her, she’s hot as hell)

That boy is a monster
M-m-m-monster
(Could I love him?)

I feel a separation coming on
Cause I know that you want to be moving on

I wish it would snow tonight
You pull me in avoid a fight
Cause I feel
A separation coming on

Just prove that there is nothing left to try
It's the truth
I'd rather we just walk tonight

You kiss me with those open eyes
It says so much
It's no surprise to you
But I've got something left to say

Don't surrender, surrender, surrender
Please remember, remember December
We were so in love back then
Now you're listenin to what they say
Don't go that way
Remember, remember, December
Please remember
Don't surrender

You said you wouldn't let them change your mind
Cause we're here together by your melting eyes
Our hearts are both on overdrive
Come with me let's run tonight don't let
These memories get left behind

Don't surrender, surrender, December
Please remember, remember, December
Where were so in love back then
Now you're listenin to what they say
Don't go that way
Remember, remember, December
Please remember

I remember us together
We both promised that forever
We could do this
Fight the pressure
Please remember December

Don't surrender

Don't Surrender, surrender, surrender
Please remember, remember, December
We were so in love back then
Now you're listenin to what they say
Do what they say
Don't go that way
Remember, remember, December
Please remember
Don't surrender

To mark the 40th anniversary of the show that revolutionized children's TV, TIME presents the most memorable moments in Sesame Street history

Though he's best known for his role on The Muppet Show (and his romantic involvement with swine), Kermit the Frog mesmerized young audiences on Sesame Street in 1970 with the tender tune "Bein' Green." The ditty, voiced by Jim Henson and written by Joe Raposo (the same man behind "C Is for Cookie"), won praise for its fun, graceful treatment of subjects like race, individuality and self-acceptance. "It's not that easy bein' green/ Having to spend each day the color of the leaves/ When I think it could be nicer bein' red or yellow or gold/ Or something much more colorful like that," Henson sang. Since then, the melancholy ballad has been performed by Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett and fellow pea-colored Muppet Oscar the Grouch. And to think, the song grew out of a simple request by one of the show's producers: "We need a song for the frog."

Twenty years on, millions celebrate fall of hated wall

BEFORE A gleaming Brandenburg Gate, Berlin partied last night like it was 1989. Germany and the world recalled the Berlin Wall, the hated physical reminder of Europe’s ideological division, and the glorious night 20 years ago when Churchill’s Iron Curtain was ripped down.

“For us, this is when the impossible became possible,” said chancellor Angela Merkel, born in west Germany and raised in the socialist east. The beaming German leader welcomed world leaders and millions of visitors to the Brandenburg Gate, serenaded by Derry-born singer Johnny McDaid whose song We are One, co-written with Berlin DJ Paul Van Dyk, was chosen as the anthem of the 20th anniversary.

“I wanted to get across the simple unity of celebration, of what happened in 1989 and how far Germany has come since then,” he said backstage. “It’s incredible looking out at hundreds of thousands of people celebrating, many of whom weren’t even alive 20 years ago.”

Between musical interludes, leaders toppled outsized Berlin Wall-like dominos decorated by schoolchildren from around the world and placed along the former death strip – now a harmless line of cobblestones in the street.

Irish actor and Berlin resident John Keogh remembered yesterday how, after a day’s work in east Berlin 20 years ago, he was caught up in the historical event. “I remember the atmosphere of disbelief mixed with euphoria,” he said, “and a man carrying an enormous chunk of the wall, laughing wildly to himself.”

Few in the crowds at the Brandenburg Gate let the persistent drizzle dampen the mood. After a two-decade transformation – from cold war no-man’s-land to Germany’s reborn capital, the city centre streets of Berlin were the scene of a second all-night party fuelled by sparkling white wine, wurst and fireworks.
