Way back in May this year, it was announced that the Wonder Girls would be making a cameo in the upcoming movie The Last Godfather (The Dumb Mafia, 라스트 갓파더). Fast forward a few months into the post-production stage and the official trailer for this film has been released!
Directed by Shim Hyung Rae (the comedian-turned-filmmaker behind the 1999 Yonggary remake and D-War in 2007, the most expensive movie in Korean history) and written by Shim and revised by Joel Cohen (an Oscar-nominated film writer who worked on the original Toy Story, Cheaper by the Dozen and Evan Almighty), The Last Godfather is a collaborative effort of a team from both Korea and the United States that was filmed in Los Angeles this spring.
A comedic remake of the 1972 original The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola, Shim Hyung Rae himself stars as Yonggu, the mentally impaired son of a mafia boss of New York’s biggest gang. The plot details are yet unclear, but with a Korean starring in an slapstick comedy set in the 50’s, The Last Godfather presents an intriguing set of dynamics that Hollywood does not normally see.
According to a Star News interview with a CJ Entertainment representative, the Wonder Girls had been contacted by Shim’s team for the special cameo appearance because the quintet’s retro concept for Nobody matched the 1950’s setting of the movie so well. This film’s US release in 2011 will serve as an extra push for the Girls who are currently promoting in the States.

Thus far, the reaction on the official trailer has been generally positive. “Shim is giving all [he's] got,” one viewer expressed on Youtube. ”I admire his courage. He had this dream that he would make movies in Hollywood someday since he was very young. We should support him and [not] be embarrassed. If it’s not funny so what? At least he tried.” Another user commented, “I have high expectations now, Shim fits gag comedy well. This looks like it’ll be better than [Shim's last film] D-War.”
Aside from Shim Hyung Rae and the Wonder Girls, the cast list also features Harvey Keitel (Pulp Fiction, Thelma and Louise, The Piano, Life on Mars), Blake Clark (50 First Dates, Toy Story 3, The Waterboy, The Mask) and Jason Mewes (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks I and II).
The Last Godfather is set to be released in Korea on the 30th and in 2011 in the United States.
